Providing water for wildlife

Providing water

Water is important for attracting wildlife to your garden because it provides essential resources for drinking, bathing, and breeding, while also creating a habitat for diverse species. A reliable water source attracts not only birds and mammals but also crucial wildlife like beneficial insects (bees, butterflies, dragonflies) and amphibians (frogs). Providing water is one of the most effective ways to boost your garden’s biodiversity by offering a critical element for survival and reproduction.

Water: Plant species behave differently to dew, showers of rain, with many holding small drops of water on their leaves, in flowers and along stems. This source of water is enough to keep a wide variety of invertebrates alive and even some reptiles. Water sources such as bird baths increase the water supply available to all fauna as well as proving essential bathing opportunities for birds and reptiles. Ensure water depth is shallow and create an island so birds and reptiles can rest.

Benefits of providing water for wildlife

  • Hydration: All animals need to drink, and water sources are critical, especially during hot weather and dry periods.
  • Bathing: Birds, in particular, use water to bathe, which helps them remove parasites and keep their feathers clean.
  • Breeding and shelter: Ponds and water features provide a habitat for amphibians like frogs, toads, and newts to breed and live.
  • Mineral and salt intake: Some insects, like butterflies, get valuable minerals and salts from water sources.
  • Food source: Water features can attract a variety of invertebrates, creating a food source for other animals like frogs, birds, and small mammals.

How to provide water

  • For small creatures: Use shallow dishes with rocks or pebbles for safe landing spots for insects like bees and butterflies.
  • For birds: Bird baths are effective, but also consider shallow ground-level water dishes, as some birds prefer them.
  • For amphibians: Create a pond with natural features, like rocks and plants, to make it appealing for frogs and other amphibians. A small sealed pot can also work for a miniature pond.
  • For a variety of wildlife: A pond is one of the most impactful options as it can create a miniature ecosystem and attract a wide diversity of life.

Keeping water sources clean

  • Keep a water source clean to prevent the buildup of algae and bacteria, which can spread disease and attract unwanted insects.
  • Clean bird baths regularly, as birds will excrete in them, and over time this can spread disease.

Ensure safety

  • If cats are a concern, place water sources away from dense cover or provide a way for birds to easily hide.
